Hemp plants and cannabis plants are both different varieties of the same species, cannabis sativa. Simply put, hemp plants generally contain more cannabidiol, and cannabis plants contain more tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a compound that causes the ‘high’ generally associated with cannabis use. Legally, hemp is defined as a cannabis plant that contains 0.3% or less THC, while marijuana is a cannabis plant that contains more than 0.3% THC. CBD can be derived from both hemp and marijuana plants.

Hemp oil (or hemp seed oil) and CBD oil are two different types of oils coming from different parts of hemp plants.

The male hemp plant produces hundreds of seeds per plant.
Hemp oil is made solely from the seeds of male hemp plants. Hemp oil has very little to no CBD content. It is omega-rich, contains a diverse profile of nutrients, fatty acids, and useful bioactive compounds, and is often used for cooking and in cosmetics.

Female hemp plants are seedless and CBD oil is made from the leaves, flowers, and stalk of the female hemp plant. This plant material contains a higher concentration of CBD, which is a compound with numerous potential health benefits. There are several methods used to extract these compounds from plant materials.
We rely solely on a full-spectrum cold ethanol extraction process.

Always be sure to check the ingredient list to be sure that you are purchasing the product that you want.

Generally, any CBD-based product will be listed as cannabidiol, full-spectrum hemp, PCR (phytocannabinoid-rich) or PCR hemp extracts. CBD products may also contain hemp seed oil, but it does not contribute any CBD or cannabinoids.

First, CBD stands for Cannabidiol, a chemical in the Cannabis or hemp plant.

Full Spectrum CBD means that our oils contain not just CBD, but also a whole host of other cannabinoids, as well as over 400 other trace compounds including terpenes and flavonoids. Our extraction process is as gentle as possible, to preserve this full range of the plant’s natural compounds; everything the plant gives to us, we give to you. This allows for what is called the “entourage effect”—the cannabinoids in our oils are more powerful together than any one of them would be individually.

Cannabinoids are the compounds in hemp that interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our bodies. They include CBD, THC, CBG, CBC, CBT and CBN, but there are also over 100 other known phytocannabinoids, and potentially hundreds (or even thousands) of phytocannabinoids we have not yet identified or studied.

The human body's endocannabinoid system consists of tiny receptors that play a key role in regulating mood, pain and everyday experience. CBD helps these receptors do what's needed in order to stimulate all kinds of beneficial changes throughout the body. You could even say our bodies are hard-wired to benefit from CBD.

The short answer is that we use a cold ethanol extraction process.
The entire process starts with high-quality seed genetics, using beyond organic farming practices, and carefully harvesting and curing
the plant materials. The hemp plant material is then "washed" with chilled food-grade ethanol to dissolve the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other useful compounds, while leaving behind virtually inedible plant matter such as fats, waxes and chlorophylls. This infusion is then gently heated to evaporate the ethanol, leaving behind our concentrated hemp extract containing a full spectrum of cannabinoids along with the flavonoids and terpenes that contribute to the benefits and sensory experience of our oils.

Lastly, most of our extract (except that used for our CBDA oil) is decarboxylated, meaning it is gently heated to convert acidic compounds like CBDA and CBGA into their final cannabinoid forms, CBD, CBG, etc. This allows for maximum CBD availability.  Once tested, this Full Extraction Cannabis Oil (FECO) is now ready to be made into our products.

The extract used in our CBDA oil is not decarboxylated, leaving high concentrations of CBDA, as well as other acidified cannabinoids like CBGA, intact.

Because our oils are Full Spectrum, they contain a small amount of THC which complies with the federal legal limits for general market hemp products (less than 0.3% THC). This is reflected on our labels, and third-party lab results confirming potency are always available upon request—just email us at info@florasophiabotanicals.com.

While not enough for intoxication when used properly, these small amounts of THC can show up in a drug test, which is why we advise people not to use our products or any Full Spectrum products if they are concerned about positive drug test results.

While we are not USDA certified organic, we are committed to using beyond organic practices in our farming and only certified organic ingredients in our oil production. We say “beyond” organic because the USDA allows for the use of certain herbicides and pesticides, and we use none.

Yes! Check the Labs page of our website for information about our third party tests and how to interpret them, then reach out to us at info@florasophiabotanicals.com and we'll be happy to send you labs for any of our products.

Because our products are full spectrum, they all contain the full range of cannabinoids, as well as other beneficial compounds like terpenes and flavonoids. However, we've created products that feature high concentrations 3 specific cannabinoids that we have found to have the richest benefits: Cannabidiol (CBD), Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and Cannabigerol (CBG).

Why did we choose these three? Research suggests these particular cannabinoid compounds may have exciting effects on our bodies that contribute to our health and wellness, including anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial effects.

CBD: CBD is one of the most widely researched cannabinoids, and can be found in higher concentrations than other cannabinoids in most hemp strains. Many people use CBD for relief from pain or inflammation, neuroprotective properties, heart health, sleep support, and managing daily stress.

CBDA: If you were to just bite the plant and start chewing it, that’s CBDA. It is a raw, acidified compound that converts into CBD naturally over time, or quickly when heated. CBDA has been shown to have a higher affinity for serotonin receptors, so may be particularly helpful for supporting sleep, promoting calm, and improved mood.

CBG: CBG is often called the “mother cannabinoid” because it occurs earlier in the hemp plant’s life cycle, and is then converted into other cannabinoids as the plant develops. CBG is special because it has higher receptive affinity than other cannabinoids—research suggests it can connect with both types of cannabinoid receptors in the body (CB1 and CB2),  potentially providing a greater range of therapeutic potential. Many people say CBG has an upwardly energetic impact, and that it can be helpful for focus.  There have also been studies that suggest CBG has a positive impact on the GI system, as well as more anti-fungal potential than CBD.

Flora Sophia offers products featuring these cannabinoids invididually (always made with full spectrum extract), as well as 2:1 combination products. The 2:1 products combine two different full spectrum extracts, so that you get the benefit of both.

Because our products are not intended or FDA approved to treat any illness or condition, we always recommend that if you are unsure whether CBD is a good addition to your wellness routine, you talk with your healthcare provider—they will be able to guide you best.

Everyone is different in how they respond to CBD, and finding the right serving size for your individual body chemistry may take time! It can take several weeks of consistent use to feel CBD’s full effects, so we recommend starting "low and slow" and giving your body adequate time, at least five to seven days, in between adjustments until you find what works for you.

If you are new to CBD or looking to enhance your daily wellness routine, we recommend starting with 10-20mg daily. For those who have more experience with CBD, or who are looking for more targeted effects, we recommend 40-60mg 1-3x daily.

Each Flora Sophia product has suggested serving on its label, and our tinctures include graduated droppers for easy measuring.

It depends on your preference, really! However, there are a few key points to keep in mind when deciding.

For those looking for more control over their serving size, or looking to experiment with varying amounts of different cannabinoids, such as CBG or CBDa, tinctures may be optimal for you.

For those who are sensitive to the natural flavor of our oils, our gummies are a great option. Each gummy contains 20mg CBD from our Full Spectrum Hemp Extract, and they come in a variety of delicious fruit flavors.

For those who are looking for spot relief from skin irritation, muscle or joint discomfort, you may benefit from our salves! Our Calm Skin salve is formulated with blue tansy and lavender for relief from itchy, inflamed or irritated skin, and our Muscle, Joint & Nerve salve contains arnica for those aches and pains.

We encourage you to combine multiple products or try several different methods over time to suit your needs. You can also check out a more detailed look at delivery methods on our blog!

The receptors in our bodies can, over time, become fatigued by strong artificial flavors. We wanted to formulate a product that would allow your body to experience our Full Spectrum Hemp Extract naturally, because the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids in our extracts all play a role in the plant’s synergistic benefits.

We recognize that natural hemp flavor is not for everyone, though! Our 47mg Orange Flavor Full Spectrum CBD is subtly flavored to pair with the existing terpene and flavonoid profile, while masking more of the plant flavor for those who don’t find it palatable. And for those looking for more flavor options, our gummies come in a variety of delicious fruit flavors!

We make a special Pet Care formulation that is lower in potency for our small furry friends! As for what serving size is best, pets are just like us—their bodies are all different and respond differently to CBD! Because serving size is based on a wide variety of factors, we recommend talking with your veterinarian about how best to incorporate CBD into your best friend’s lifestyle.

We recommend consuming our ingestible products within 6 months of purchase. Our topical products can be used indefinitely, although they may lose a small amount of potency over time if kept longer than 1-2 years. Always store in a cool dry place. Heat degrades all oils.

While none of our products contain grapefruit, CBD has been shown to be an inhibitor of the same CYP-450 enzyme, which is the reason grapefruit is contraindicated for certain medications. We put this warning on our labels because anyone who has a grapefruit contraindication should also speak with their doctor before using CBD.

Our Chronic Care packages are designed for individuals or families who consistently and frequently use CBD oil—we created this option to make our products accessible and affordable for people who use larger amounts.

We offer two standard Chronic Care packages, containing 7 bottles of either our 60mg or 47mg Full Spectrum CBD, but we also offer personalized packages to meet your individual needs—please reach out to us at info@florasophiabotanicals.com with a bit about what you’re looking for, and we’ll be happy to help you customize a package.

We do recommend that you purchase one or two bottles first to see if our products are a good match before making the larger investment of a Chronic Care Package. You can use our first time customer code – Welcome20 - for 20% off your first purchase!

Please note that our Chronic Care Packages are meant for individual or family use only and are not authorized for resale.

It is legal at the federal to fly with CBD products within in the United States since 2018, provided they contain less than 0.3% THC. However, some states have their own restrictions on CBD products.

When flying with CBD products, keep in mind that all TSA rules apply, which includes the guidance for any type of liquids (oils, tinctures, creams) that must be must be less than three ounces.

According to the TSA website:

https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/medical-marijuana

Marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA. (See the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, Pub. L. 115-334.)  TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state or federal authorities.

TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers. Accordingly, TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but if any illegal substance is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.

Traveling with CBD products outside of the United States varies widely from country to country. We strongly suggest checking the federal and regional laws of the countries that you will be visiting to be sure you are following their regulations. Keep in mind that some countries with legalized or decriminalized hemp still do not allow its import. The best way to find reliable information is to contact the customs agency in your destination country, or check their official website.
